The Extent of the Dissent
Listening to comments on social media, it’s clear most of the vocal people didn’t (and still don’t) understand what really drove each candidate’s voter base. In an election where both candidates were widely disliked, it never really was about voting for a candidate’s character. After all, most people felt that their choices were either a corrupt politician or a bigoted outsider.
For many, it was more a vote for economic self interest, where people voted against the elite and powers-that-be and voted for dismantling the political machine most citizens feel powerless against.
That’s probably why the predictions were so wrong. People underestimated the number of people who felt they were no longer represented by the political system.
Whether you supported Trump, supported Hillary, or decided to vote third party, I think most people underestimated the extent of the dissent.
