Understanding Both Sides
If you don't understand the other side's point of view, then you don't understand the issue. You don't have to agree with them, but without understanding where they are coming from and why they want what they want, your opinion is biased and incomplete.
A solution cannot be made under those circumstances without one side dictating to the other side what the terms will be. There can be no mutually beneficial solution, and there will always be animosity.
